Seeking Professional Help

Adam and Heather Walker will be the first ones to tell you that there is no manual when it comes to parenting. However, there is help and no parents need to feel like they are alone!

In episode 1 of our “Winning With ADHD” podcast, they share what led to them realizing they needed professional help in how they showed up as parents. Here is a sneak-peek that will get you wanting for more!

“When Emily turned 3 that is when we started reaching out and getting professional help. One of the biggest steps we took is we realized that as parents, this is not working, and something had to change. One thing that I've learned is that if you expect something to change, you have to change yourself first.

That's when we started seeking doctors’ help. It wasn't just to change Emily. We realized it was how we needed to change as parents and that was where that process began. And it really hasn't stopped for the last 13 years of just learning-  learning and changing and constantly evolving to make that relationship work between us and our kids.

Sometimes you have to be willing to let go of that picture that you have pre-determined in your head of how the relationship between your you and your kids should be. There is that variable where you can't control their behaviors. Everybody has that free will. You've got to be able to grow and adapt as they learn and grow themselves. That relationship is constantly changing and what worked six months ago may not work today. We are continuing to grow all the time. “

It’s ok to get help! There may not be one manual for parenting, but there are infinite resources that can help you learn and grow, including therapists that specialize in ADHD behaviors.
